Asus 50x Max

I purchased this lil' demon as a result of my Kenwood 52x TrueX breaking down, which I will do a review on when they replace it. Anyway, let me start from the beginning. I got it out of the package stuck it in and it didn't work =). I eventually fixed the problem, which had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the drive, so don't think that the quality is bad. In fact, the reason I picked it was for the Asus name and the access time, which is supposed to be better than the Acer 50x Max.

Well anyhow, I get it working and I notice something right off the "get go," this baby is loud. I have a Super Case with 2-80mm Evercool fans and a Panaflo 92mm fan all running and Asus 50x out "screams" them. Another thing I noticed quickly was that it takes a good 8-10 seconds to get spinning. When I inserted the StarCraft: Brood War CD it took 12.2 seconds from the time the drawer closed to the time the autoread window opened. I'll get more into that in the benchmarks section.

The benchmarking system:

Abit BP6 w/ latest ATA66 Driver installed
Dual Celerons @ 561 MHz
64MB Corsair PC-133 SDRAM
Voodoo3 3000
Quantum Fireball CR 13 GB on ATA66
Windows 98 SE (Please don't send emails about SMP not helping in Win98)
Asus 50x Max (CD-S500A) by itself on IDE 1.

Media Used:

"The Matrix" on a CD-R in .asf format (458MB used)
The StarCraft: Brood War CD
Rollercoaster Tycoon CD
Audio - Collective Soul: Dosage (Good CD =) )

Stopwatch =)
SiSoft Sandra Professional
Windows 98 SE (autoread)
